Dominion Energy and Santee Cooper are requesting an air permit to lower standards for our safety from the SC Department of Environmental Sciences (SCDES) for the proposed Edisto gas plant. If built, this humongous gas plant would pollute the air impacting at least 2 million people across SC, GA, and FL. *The Union of Concerned Scientists has starkly warned, “For communities and the climate, the imperative is clear: use renewables more, use gas plants less.” *Methane gas is a fossil fuel that causes climate change and risks peoples’ health. *Harvard data scientists report the proposed power plant would emit over 164.3 tons of particulate matter, a kind of air pollution so small it can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Unsafe at any level of exposure, those living nearby will face increased hospitalization due to cardiovascular issues, heart attack, pneumonia, asthma, stroke and cancer. *We the customers will have the pay for the Canadys project as it keeps doubling billions of dollars and continues to rise with our monthly electric bills. *The construction of a major new interstate gas pipeline through critical wetland habitats and rural areas in the ACE Basin with the power of eminent domain to violate private property rights encourages more polluting industrial development. *The Edisto River and the ACE Basin are irreplaceable wild treasures. Our people, waters and environment need your protection. Please safeguard a bright future for South Carolina by not allowing lower standards for this air permit. *We are in a hurricane prone area and another Hugo would tear up the proposed plant creating a huge disaster. *Thank you for hearing the wishes of the public and protecting us from an environmental nightmare created by big oil.
